The Mazda Motor Corp. will be increasing its Zoom-Zoom family presence in Oman. This goal will be backed by Towell Auto Centre by launching the all-new Mazda CX-9.
“This is the first time the Mazda family is bringing an SUV to Oman, so there is much excitement among the fans of Mazda. We can assure our customers that the eager wait for the outstanding vehicle will be well worth it and we are sure to give the sultanate’s SUV market a new definition,” said S Kasthurirengan, General Manager, Towell Auto Centre.
The CX-9, based on the stretched Mazda6 platform, is a seven-seat sports crossover sport utility built alongside the small CX-7. The SUV, manufactured at the Ujina 1 plant of the automaker in Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan, made its official global debut at last years New York International Auto Show.
The all-new CX-9 features the 3.5 L Ford “Cyclone” V6 engine dubbed as the “MZI” in Mazda guise. The 2008 version of the SUV uses a 3.7 liter V6 engine. According to the Japanese automaker, the new engine will produce 273 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. Additionally, the CX-9 will use an Aisin sourced six-speed automatic transmission with a console-mounted shifter which can be likened to the complex Mercedes-Benz gate.
The CX-9 flaunts more muscular stance and an angular nose. Its sedan-like honeycomb grille adds to its atypical appeal and makes the Mazda CX-9 stand out from the rest in its category. 20-inch alloy wheels come in this machine along with features like high-intensity-discharge (HID) headlights, said AME Info.
On board this stunner is comfort and roominess in splendid abundance, AME Info continued. The three-row sport utility vehicle has front bucket seats and a 60/40 split second row, with a backrest that can recline or fold flat. The third row splits 50/50 and features easy adjustments to make more room for leg space and cargo. Bose stereo with surround sound, keyless entry, power windows and cruise control are standard features on a Mazda CX-9. Add to this the refined chrome accents and dimmed windows for the final touches of a pure feel of opulence.
To bolster the safety features of the SUV, Mazdas pool of engineers have incorporated a bunch of standard equipment that includes the Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control, Roll Stability Control, front side impact airbags and 3 row side Air Curtains. The CX-9 will offer options such as a Handsfree Bluetooth phone link, DVD navigation system, Backup Camera, and a rear entertainment system with the Bose 5.1 surround sound.
The Mazda CX-9s standard safety features also cover an all disc antilock brakes, side impact air bags, three-row side air curtains and an Electronic Stability System (ESS) with rollover mitigation technology, and traction control systems.
Crammed with superb auto features and refined with amenities and finesse like no other in its class, the CX-9 SUV promises to bring an elating dose of Zoom-Zoom to Oman. Tremec is an OE transmission manufacturer that supplies manual transmissions for General Motors, Ford, Chrysler, Aston Martin, and many medium and heavy duty truck applications. Their TKO transmission is a high strength overdrive manual 5-speed that was originally designed to be retrofitted into Mustang Fox body cars to replace the weaker T5, but will also bolt up to the standard Ford four speed passenger car bellhousing. When Tremec realized that enthusiasts were adapting it for GM applications, they decided to capitalize on a huge opportunity and produce a GM version of the TKO as well.
The GM version will bolt directly up to almost any standard Chevrolet/Buick/Olds/Pontiac passenger car four-speed bellhousing. Though only Ford and GM versions of the TKO are available, Mopar enthusiasts can get all the custom parts they need to adapt a Ford version TKO to virtually any Mopar V8 engine from Keisler Engineering. The TKO has never been original equipment in any production car, although its great-grandpa, the Tremec TR-3550 was in a limited-production Ford Mustang Cobra in the mid 1990s. The TKO is purely an aftermarket transmission designed for high-performance cars.
There are three basic models available: the TKO-500 and two variations of the TKO-600. The wide-ratio TKO-500 is rated for a continuous 500 lb.-ft. of torque, and offers a deep 3.27:1 first gear ratio and a 32% overdrive ratio in fifth gear. The close-ratio TKO-600 is rated for a continuous 600 lb.-ft. of torque, and has a 2.87:1 first gear and either an 18% overdrive or a 36% overdrive ratio in fifth gear. The rated torque capacities are said to be quite conservative, as there are a significant number of cars in the field with engines that exceed the torque rating by a large margin, and failures are rare.
The TKO uses a three-rail internal shift mechanism, eliminating any external linkage and the adjustment issues that go with it. The short throw billet aluminum shifter can be removed, flipped 180 degrees, and then reinstalled to provide an additional shift position. Optional custom shifters are also available from Keisler Engineering in several different configurations to mimic the shift positions in various musclecars. The TKO utilizes cast iron shift forks, a one-piece counter shaft, and tapered roller bearings on the input, output, and counter shafts for added strength.
Every TKO transmission provides both mechanical and electronic speedometer outputs. The mechanical output is a Ford design, but you can get hybrid speedometer cables for GM or Mopar applications. They also feature a reverse light switch and a neutral safety switch that can be wired into your vehicle’s existing harness. The transmission has an internal reverse lockout feature that prevents you from accidentally going from fifth gear into reverse. You have to go into the center of the “Neutral” gate before it will allow you to shift into reverse.
The Tremec TKO is an excellent choice for the musclecar, hot rod or street rod owner that enjoys shifting his own gears and wants to drive his car to distant car shows or other events. I have one in my 1967 Pontiac Firebird and have driven a number of other cars with TKO transmissions installed. The overdrive makes a huge difference on the highway, and there aren’t many other overdrive transmission choices out there that will stand up to the kind of power that the TKO can take. None of the other overdrive transmissions available at this time offer as much versatility as the Tremec TKO.

Cold weather can wreak havoc on your skin, your heating bill and the air pressure in your tires, but did you also know that it can destroy your cabling if its not handled properly? One such cable, easily susceptible to cold weather deterioration, is THHN cable.
What is THHN cable?
While the terminology of some cables is convoluted and difficult to understand, most of the names of cables are acronyms or abbreviations. The name “THHN” simply comes from “Thermoplastic, High-Heat Resistance, Nylon-Coated.” THHN cable is classified under Hook-up Wire and is a very popular cable, typically used as general building wire. “General” simply means that it has several different applications, all falling under the building industry. Like all general use cables, there is no one “correct” application for THHN cable. However, it is very important to understand any cable’s strengths and weaknesses, what environments it can and cannot be used.
THHN Cable Strengths
Knowing where the name THHN comes from helps identify the cable’s strengths. Because it is a thermoplastic material it can be heated and cooled several times to reshape it, but like any material it has high and low temperature limits that it can withstand before becoming unstable. These specific temperatures can differ between individual manufacturers.
With the “High Heat” rating in its name, that infers it can be used in high temperature applications. What specific applications depend on the actual specifications of the cable, and the operating temperature ranges must be known to determine this. “Nylon-coated” identifies a specific thermoplastic material being used. THHN also has thermoplastic PVC material as insulation, but the Nylon is used as the cable’s jacket and is exposed to the elements. Nylon is a strong material, and is so widely used that THHN cable is more cost effective than other building cables made to withstand more demanding environments.
THHN Cable Weaknesses
The very same materials that give THHN cable it’s strengths also lend weaknesses as well in the right (or should I say wrong?) environments.
Because of the Nylon coating, THHN cable can become stiff at lower temperatures. Temperatures lower than 14F can make it susceptible to cracking. Thermoplastic materials need to undergo a process called plasticizing to function at constant low temperatures, but for cables that will be installed and then never move this isn’t necessary. Proper handling will allow for the cable to withstand installation and then cold temperatures up to the lowest end of the operating temperature range.
The term “thermoplastic” is defined as a material that melts into a liquid at high temperatures and freezes at lower temperatures. The colder it gets, the more it freezes, until the slightest agitation will cause fracture. Bending the cable causes one side of the jacket to compress and the other to expand, which is just the type of agitation needed to cause cracking.
Proper Installation of THHN Cable
To make sure that your THHN cable doesnt crack during installation, there are a few simple steps to follow:
Store cable indoors when the weather turns cold; a stable temperature of 65F is best.
If this is not possible, bring the cable inside at this temperature for 24 hours before installation
Never install THHN when the temperature outside is below 14F
While exposed to cold temperatures, do not drop it to the floor and protect the cable from impacts from other objects as this can crack the stiffened material.
After proper installation, THHN cable can safely operate in outside temperatures below 14F given that it remains stationary.
